Dollar Keeps Gaining On Mark
The dollar reached a fourth straight 8-year high against the mark Wednesday on rising German unemployment, but slipped against the yen on worries about U.S.-Japanese trade friction.
Germany’s jobless rate climbed to 11.4 percent in July, its highest level for the month since World War II. The rise exceeded forecasts and weakened any lingering speculation that the country’s central bank might raise interest rates to help stabilize the faltering mark.
The dollar has gained 2.3 percent against the mark since July 31 and 22 percent against the mark so far in 1997.
