Men Using $50 Bills Fleece Restaurants

Employees at two Coeur d’Alene restaurants have told police they were ripped off by a man who faked payment with a $50 bill.

In the most recent incident, a man in his late 30s ordered $25.68 worth of food late Tuesday at the International House of Pancakes. He then put a $50 bill on the counter and the 18-year-old cashier made change for him.

When the cashier put some coins into the register, the man put his change near the $50 bill and swiped it, according to a Coeur d’Alene police report. The cashier confronted the man about the money, but he denied taking it and left with a woman and some children.

The man was described as 6 feet tall, 250 pounds with short brown hair and a full beard. He was wearing a gray tank top.

A cashier at Shari’s Restaurant reported a similar incident late Monday involving two men. One of the men asked for a job application for his niece and the other ordered a cup of coffee to go.

He placed a $50 bill on the counter and told the 19-year-old cashier he wanted his change in $20 bills. The man then pulled out another $50 bill and asked her to give him $20 bills in change, confusing the cashier.

The restaurant owner tried to resolve the situation by giving the man a $50 bill out of the register and asking both to leave. She later discovered the man had defrauded the restaurant of $50, according to a police report.

The man with the money was described as white, 5 feet 4 inches tall, 190 pounds, with long black hair and a mustache. The other man was 5-feet-11, 175 pounds, had shoulder-length brown hair and a mustache. He was wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt.
