Rashell’s 1-Under Round Delivers State Amateur

Rob Rashell, a University of Washington junior from Snohomish, carded a 1-under-par 40-31-71 Saturday to win the 71st Washington State Amateur golf tournament by two shots.

Rashell made birdie on three of the last four holes en route to a 286 total, even par for 72 holes on the two courses of the Gold Mountain Golf Complex.

The 52 who made the 36-hole cut, from a starting field of 147, played the last two rounds on the 6,907-yard, par-72 Olympic Course.

Max McCain of Seattle, who tied for second place in last year’s tournament, started the day as No. 2 and was runner-up again, closing with a 76 for 288. Craig Welty of Burlington, the leader after 36 and 54 holes, finished third at 289 following a 78.

Defending champion Darren Slackman of Spokane, a Huskies golf teammate of Rashell, finished in a fourth-place tie at 290 with first-round leader Ryan Kelly of the host course. Each closed with a 77.

Kyle Kelly of Spokane shot a 77 for a 296 total to tie for 12th place.
