1923: United States Steel Corporation instituted an 8-hour work day.

1952: The first recording of “Hound Dog” was made by Big Mama Thornton. It later became a smash hit for Elvis Presley.

1956: NBC teamed news anchors Chet Huntley and David Brinkley for the Democratic National Convention, creating television’s most popular news team.

1960: The first two-way conversation using a satellite took place.

1961: Construction began on the Berlin Wall separating East and West Berlin.
