New Bridge Opens On Harvard Road

From Staff And Wire Reports

A new, four-lane Harvard Road bridge opened Wednesday in the Spokane Valley after $4.6 million in spending and three years of planning.

Construction began last summer.

Now, crews have to demolish the old bridge. It is just two lanes wide, and is bordered by narrow sidewalks. It was built in 1955 and had been plagued with repair problems, including a section that gave way five years ago.

County spokesman Chad Hutson said crews will demolish it by the end of the month.

To avoid polluting the river, crews will use netting to catch debris.

Harvard runs from the Liberty Lake exit of Interstate 90 north to Otis Orchards. The bridge crosses the river just north of the I-90 interchange.
