Dishman Project Continuing

Although slightly behind schedule, county engineers still hope to reopen a widened, improved Dishman-Mica Road by the end of September.

Construction crews plan to begin laying asphalt today between 16th and 28th avenues. Crews already have widened the road to four lanes, adding a four-foot bicycle path and sidewalks on the east side. They also have added an eight-foot shoulder to the west side.

The $1.6 million project is designed to decrease traffic congestion and improve driver visibility between 16th and University Road. Dishman-Mica has seen increased traffic volume and numerous accidents in recent years, according to county engineers.

The road will remain closed until the project is completed next month. Cars are being routed onto 16th and University until then.

Seniors classes for fall

Courses for senior citizens, ranging from watercolors to writing, history to art history, are scheduled in the Spokane Valley this fall.

The Community College of Spokane has announced its offerings for residents 55 years and older. The classes start in late September and run through December.

Classes include exercise, watercolor painting, a writer’s workshop, history of the Inland Northwest, modern European history and a class called Drawing on Art/ History, showing how art and world event have affected one another.

Locations range from Saks Restaurant to Arbor Grove Mobile Home Park. Tuition ranges from $15 to $30, depending on the course. For more information, call 533-3393; to register by phone, call 533-3770.

New owner for kindergarten

Pioneer School has purchased Kreative Kindergarten, a private kindergarten that has run for 20 years.

Previous owner Carolyn Stewart has retired.

The center at 9616 E. Broadway will offer pre-school and kindergarten classes, under the name Pioneer Early Childhood Center.
