At least three areas could hold wild elk in New York, say university researchers in Syracuse.

The areas include the western peripheral regional of Adirondack Park, large portions of Catskill Park and surrounding areas and parts of Cattaraugus and Allegany counties.

The study is trying to pave the way for restoration of elk, which once were native to the state.
