Yank Mtv? Here’s What Some Think

Recently, Our Generation told you about a town in Texas that, as of Sept. 1, is pulling MTV from its cable service and replacing it with a Christian program. We wondered what you thought about this.

Here’s what a few of you said:

“I personally think it’s a good idea if we pull MTV, because all they ever do is over hype the bands they want to play over and over, while the smaller underground bands don’t make it.” - David Gendron, Valley High graduate

“I like watching MTV because I think some of the shows on there are very entertaining.” - Ian Gibons, Glover Middle School

“There is nothing wrong with what is on TV; it’s what you make of it.” - Missy Kelly, 22.

“If Spokane pulled MTV, I wouldn’t miss it.” - Joseph Kennedy, Ben Franklin Academy

“I don’t even watch MTV, but I feel like it’s all right to have MTV. If you think that it’s a bad influence on your children, maybe you should check out the other things your kids are watching.” - Scot Williams, Rogers High graduate

“I don’t think they should ban MTV and replace it with a Christian network but instead ban things like ‘Beavis & Butthead’ from MTV. I also think there are better ways to reach God than through television. What happened to going to church or just simply praying?” - Sarah Powers, 13

Several parents called in support of pulling MTV, saying most of the programs are negative and degrading. One suggested making MTV a premium-pay channel.

A few felt parents need to be responsible for controlling what their children watch, not a city.
