Modano Injures Knee

The Dallas Stars overcame the loss of NHL scoring leader Mike Modano in the first period to beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-1 in Dallas on Wednesday.

Modano, who started the night with 15 goals and 23 assists for 38 points, was expected to miss four to six weeks with a torn ligament.

Carey waived

Goaltender Jim Carey, named the league’s top goalie in 1995-96 but a disappointment since being obtained by Boston last March 1, has been placed on waivers.

If Carey clears waivers, the team plans to send him to Providence of the AHL.

Savard promoted

Chicago named Denis Savard, the third-leading scorer in team history, an assistant coach.
