Sommers Recovers From Heart Surgery

From Staff And Wire Reports

State Rep. Duane Sommers is recuperating at home after undergoing heart surgery on Thanksgiving.

Sommers, a Republican who represents Spokane’s 6th District, suffered a heart attack last Thursday and was taken to the hospital, his wife said Wednesday.

“There was no warning, except that he thought his arms ached from raking leaves” the previous day, Mae Sommers said. After lying down, he began sweating and said he was having trouble moving.

Sommers underwent angioplasty for a blocked artery and was released from the hospital on Sunday. He is scheduled for a second angioplasty on a partially blocked artery later this month.

The seven-year veteran of the Legislature ran unsuccessfully for Spokane mayor this year. He is doing well and expects to be in Olympia for the start of the legislative session in January, Mae Sommers said.
