Events To Mark Pearl Harbor
There will be Pearl Harbor Day memorial ceremonies in Spokane and Ephrata, Wash., on Sunday, the 56th anniversary of the Japanese attack on the U.S. Navy in Hawaii.
In Spokane, there will be a public ceremony at the U.S. Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center at 5101 N. Assembly. It will begin promptly at 3 p.m. Organizers are asking those wishing to attend to arrive by 2:45 p.m.
About 40 survivors of the attack will be on hand for the ceremony. They will be introduced by Cmdr. Ted Fessel.
Raymond Garland of Coeur d’Alene will be awarded the Purple Heart during the ceremony. Garland, a former Marine, was injured when the Japanese attacked the battleship USS Tennessee.
There will be about 200 members of the U.S. Navy Reserve on hand for the ceremony.
In Ephrata, the American Legion Post 21 will rededicate the Ephrata Community Honor Roll of World Wars monument.
The monument had been vandalized and water damage had partially obscured the list of war veterans. The American Legion spent more than $1,700 repairing the structure, which stands next to the Ephrata Recreation Center on Basin Street.
The rededication ceremony begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The public is invited to attend.
