Kenny Gregory sparked a 16-0 run to start the second half and No. 2 Kansas, playing without injured Paul Pierce, shrugged off some first-half lethargy to beat Division II Emporia State 102-50 Thursday night in Lawrence, Kan.

The Jayhawks (7-0), just two days removed from a bruising and emotionally draining 90-87 victory over No. 4 Arizona, led only 39-30 at halftime against the shorter, slower Hornets (1-2).

Corey Benjamin scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half as the Beavers defeated the Anteaters at Irvine, Calif.

The Beavers (4-0) shot 50 percent for the game and dominated the boards with a 66-26 rebounding margin despite not starting a player taller than 6-foot-6.

Ben Jones led the Anteaters (1-4) with 17 points.

Ala.-Birmingham 79, N. Texas 73

Fred Williams had 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Blazers (4-3) to a win over the Eagles (0-6) in Birmingham. Robert Washington scored a game-high 27 points for North Texas of the Big West Conference.
