Love, Mickelson In Front
Davis Love III and Phil Mickelson moved four strokes ahead of their nearest competitors midway through the Million Dollar Challenge in Sun City, South Africa.
Love started the day one stroke behind Mickelson and beat his playing partner’s four-under 68 by a stroke to leave them both at 9-under 135 in the field of 12 golfers.
Four strokes back at 139 were U.S. Open champion Ernie Els of South Africa, Nick Price of Zimbabwe and Germany’s Bernhard Langer. Jesper Parnevik of Sweden was at 140.
Dan Forsman and Catriona Matthew shot a 7-under-par 64 to lead by one stroke at the JCPenney Classic in Tarpon Springs, Fla.
The tournament matches PGA Tour and LPGA players in team competition.
After Friday’s modified alternate-shot format, Forsman and Matthew have a two-day total of 13-under 129.
Paul Azinger and Susie Redman, Mike Brisky and Barb Mucha and Mike Hulbert and Donna Andrews are one shot back heading into today’s better-ball competition.
