Tar Heels In 14th Ncaa Soccer Final

Robin Confer scored the go-ahead goal on a free kick in the 69th minute as North Carolina held Santa Clara to one second-half shot in a 2-1 victory to advance to the NCAA women’s soccer championship.

The Tar Heels (26-0-1) will play in their 14th championship game Sunday against Connecticut, which beat Notre Dame 2-1 in Friday’s other semifinal.

Sara Whalen scored once in each half for Connecticut (23-3), which lost twice to the Irish (23-1-1) during the regular season. Jenny Streiffer scored Notre Dame’s lone goal in the 76th minute.

North Carolina has won 13 of the 15 NCAA women’s soccer titles contested.

Santa Clara’s goal was the first allowed by the Tar Heels in the tournament and ended their streak of four consecutive shutouts.
