Martinez Close To Deal With Red Sox
Red Sox pitcher Pedro Martinez, obtained earlier in the off-season in a trade with Montreal, is reportedly close to signing a $50 million, five-year deal.
Sources in Boston and in his native Dominican Republic told The Boston Globe that Martinez is getting ready to sign.
Red Sox spokesman Kevin Shea would not confirm the report Saturday and Jim Bronner, one of the pitcher’s agents, declined comment, saying only “there is no deal at this time.”
The Arizona Diamondbacks opened their wallet again, signing free-agent right-hander Willie Blair to a $11.5 million, three-year contract.
Blair will get a $750,000 signing bonus and salaries of $3 million in 1998, $3.5 million in 1999 and $4.25 million in 2000.
