Quick Kicks

You ordered Tuna on wry?

It looked like something out of the Rich Kotite era. It sounded that way, too.

In the fourth quarter of Sunday’s disgraceful, playoff-crippling loss to the Colts, players and coaches on the Jets sideline were showered with profanity-laced insults from angry fans who occupied the section behind the bench.

“It seemed like a total flashback, listening to what the people were saying,” tight end Kyle Brady said quietly after the unspeakable, unexplainable and unbelievable 22-14 loss to the woeful Colts at Giants Stadium. “It was something out of the past, like a time warp.”

The fans spoke the truth. The Jets, faced with a virtual must-win situation and eager to overturn the franchise’s history of December collapses, reverted to their wretched past.

“That,” Bill Parcells screamed at his stunned players after the game, “wasn’t even professional football.”

Carter’s catching on

With two touchdown catches Sunday, Minnesota’s Cris Carter pushed his career total to 86 as he moved past Paul Warfield and Lance Alworth into fifth on the NFL career list.

Carter finished the day with three catches and now has 750 in his career, tying him for seventh on the all-time list with Charlie Joiner.

Celebrations by the Bay

The San Francisco 49ers plan a tribute to four-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Montana during next Monday night’s game against Denver, when the team will retire his No. 16.

Also, Jerry Rice, sidelined since suffering a serious knee injury Aug. 31, could make his return to action that night.

By the numbers

Pittsburgh’s Kordell Stewart has 10 rushing touchdowns, two short of Steve Grogan’s single-season NFL record for a quarterback… . Brett Favre of the Packers became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for 30 TDs in four consecutive seasons… . The Falcons sacked Craig Whelihan four times to push their league-leading total to 53… . The Chiefs have gone an NFL-record nine games without allowing a second-half touchdown… . Chris Chandler has thrown a TD pass in 10 straight games, helping the Falcons win four straight for their longest streak since a five-game run in 1991… . Raymont Harris became the seventh Bears player to rush for 1,000 yards, but his season ended when he broke his left leg in the third quarter… . Former Central Valley High/University of Idaho kicker Mike Hollis missed a 44-yard field goal for Jacksonville in the third quarter, ending his streak of successful 3-pointers at 16… . Aeneas Williams of the Cardinals had his fifth interception this year and 37th of his career… . Denver is 7-0 at home but 4-3 on the road.

Noteworthy

Darion Conner, the Eagles special teams MVP, broke his right wrist in the third quarter and did not return to the field… . After being demoted to third string for seven games following a horrible three-week stint as starting quarterback for the Bears, ex-Seahawk Rick Mirer got to play the final 5:28.

The final thought

“The Chiefs didn’t beat the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. They ended the Oakland Raiders.”
