Bomb Found In Reportedly Stolen Car

From Staff And Wire Reports

Officers who stopped a reportedly stolen car early Monday got a surprise when a pipe bomb was found in the vehicle, Spokane police said.

Richard M. Mehaffey, 33, of Spokane was booked into the Spokane County Jail on a charge of taking a vehicle without permission.

The car he was driving was stopped about 5 a.m. near Hogan and Marietta after a man reported that a 1986 Mustang had just been stolen from the Gung Ho Restaurant parking lot, 1303 N. Division, police said.

Officers arrested Mehaffey and, while searching the car, discovered the pipe bomb.

The street was closed down for several hours while the police Explosives Disposal Unit retrieved the bomb, which is believed to have been placed in the car by Mehaffey, police said.

Police do not know why the bomb was in the car. , DataTimes
