Ex-Champ Arrested

Compiled From Wire Services

Former three-time boxing champion Wilfredo Gomez was arrested for investigation of cocaine possession.

Police said they found Gomez using cocaine and confiscated six small bags of the drug from his car. Gomez, 41, was arrested in the northeastern town of Loiza and taken to the Judicial Center in Carolina, a San Juan suburb, where he could face charges. His lawyer, Fernando Iglesias, denied that Gomez broke the law.

Gomez held the World Boxing Council super bantamweight and featherweight titles and the world junior lightweight crown in the 1980s. He lost most of his assets soon after retiring and had previously been arrested for investigation of domestic violence and cocaine possession.

Willie Pastrano, a light heavyweight champion in the 1960s and the man who taught Muhammad Ali to dance in the ring, is dead at age 62.

He died Saturday in New Orleans of inoperable cancer that started in his liver and spread.
