Top 25 basketball

Miles Simon scored 20 points and Bennett Davison had 11 points and 18 rebounds to lead No. 6 Arizona to an 83-68 victory over Baylor on Monday night in Waco, Texas.

Mike Bibby added 18 points and Jason Terry had 14 for the Wildcats (6-2).

It was the third road game in seven days for the Wildcats.

Patrick Hunter led Baylor (3-3) with 19 points as the Wildcats shut down center Brian Skinner, who led the Bears in scoring in four of their first five games. The senior entered the game averaging 19.0 points and 12.8 rebounds, but was held to 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Wildcats finished with a 46-32 rebound advantage, 17-10 on the offensive end.

(3) Kansas 89, Penn 71

Raef LaFrentz had 25 points and 11 rebounds as the Jayhawks rebounded from their first loss of the season by rolling past the Quakers to take third place in the Franklin National Bank Classic in Washington, D.C.

Paul Pierce added 14 points and T.J. Pugh had 13 as Kansas’ formidable front-court trio was simply too tall and too strong for Penn (3-4). The Jayhawks (9-1), able to punch the ball inside early and often, shot 57 percent and outrebounded the Quakers 35-28.

Kansas, which dropped one spot in the Top 25 after Sunday’s 86-83 loss to No. 19 Maryland, failed to win a regular-season tournament for the first time since 1992.

Geo. Wash. 70, (19) Maryland 66

Shawnta Rogers scored 23 points and made a steal that led to a crucial four-point play down the stretch as the Colonials upset the Terrapins in the championship game of the Franklin National Bank Classic in Washington, D.C.

The victory avenged the loss by George Washington (7-2) to its neighbor Maryland (4-3) in last year’s title game.

The 23 points was one shy of Rogers’ career high. He also had four steals, was 7 of 16 from the field, 7 of 8 from the free-throw line and was named tournament MVP.

Yegor Mescheriakov had 19 points, while Koul finished with 15.

Laron Profit led Maryland with 15 points and eight rebounds.
