Northern Iowa’s Eldon Miller has been coaching for 35 years, so he’s not about to start celebrating wildly after a victory over a Top 10 team at Cedar Falls, Iowa.
“It feels good, but keep it all in perspective,” Miller said after his Panthers stopped No. 10 Iowa 84-78 on Tuesday. “It’s wonderful for our fans. It’s good for my team, but we have a long way to go.”
Chris Burdine scored 17 points and Northern Iowa used a pesky man-to-man defense to hand the Hawkeyes their first loss in seven games. Northern Iowa (4-1) had lost seven straight and nine of 11 to Iowa.
Miller, in his 12th year at Northern Iowa, said his offense had struggled the first four games but broke out against Iowa.
Miami, Ohio 80, (7) Xavier 72
At Oxford, Ohio, Wally Szczerbiak scored 29 points and the RedHawks (5-1) survived a late charge by the Muskateers (5-1) for their first over a Top 10 team in 24 years.
Szczerbiak, who has led Miami with his impeccable outside shooting, missed only two of his nine shots in the first half as Miami stunned Xavier by building a 16-point lead.

At Las Cruces, N.M., Royce Olney’s 4-point play snapped the final tie of the game and his two free throws with 13 seconds left secured the Lobos’ (6-1) win over the Aggies (3-3).

Kareem Reid made a 3-pointer and scored two baskets off midcourt steals during an early run, sparking the Razorbacks (7-0) to victory over the Cardinals (2-4) in Louisville.
Arkansas is off to its best start since the school’s 1994 national champions opened with 10 straight victories. Louisville lost its fourth consecutive game, all to Top 25 teams.

Brian Earl scored 19 points as the Tigers (7-0 ) rallied in the second half for a win over the Bison (3-6) at Lewisburg, Pa.

At Boulder, Colo., G.G. Smith hit two layups to trigger a rally in the final two minutes and the Bulldogs (5-2) held off the upset-minded Buffalos (4-3).
