Huskies Win Handily Over Byu

Deon Luton scored 18 points to lead University of Washington to an 83-68 victory over Brigham Young Tuesday night in Provo, Utah.

Luton twice had eight points during streaks for Washington (5-1) of the Pacific-10 Conference.

Washington trailed 9-5 five minutes into the game, but used a 20-4 spurt to take control and led 39-28 at the end of the first half.

Luton started Washington’s run, hitting back-to-back 3-point baskets. He added a pair of free throws later in the streak. BYU (1-6) of the Western Athletic Conference managed just 1 of 8 field goal attempts during that span with Washington building a 27-13 lead.

Mekeli Wesley, who finished with 31 points, then took charge for BYU, scoring eight straight points to bring his team back.

Wesley and Justin Weidauer, who had 16 points, brought BYU within 43-39 with 16:06 left in the game.

BYU stayed within four points until Michael Johnson hit a pair of 3-point baskets for the Huskies with about 10 minutes remaining.

Luton finished things off by scoring eight points in an 11-2 run that gave Washington a 73-57 lead with three minutes left.

Houston 54, California 51

Freshman guard Treva Crosby hit two free throws with 10 seconds left to lift the Cougars to a victory over the visiting Bears.

Crosby led the Cougars (7-0) with 17 points, hitting 5 of 10 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Sean Marks led California (0-4) with 15 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Michael Gill added 14 points off the bench.

Montana 86, Whitman 46

Mat Seidensticker hit all five of this 3-point shots on the way to a game-high 19 points, leading the Grizzlies (4-5) to a victory over the Missionaries (1-3) in Missoula.

J.R. Camel had 5 steals to become Montana’s career steals leader. His 154 career steals broke the record of 151 set last year by Chris Spoja.

Will Washington led Whitman, an NAIA Division II school, with 14 points.

Montana St. 71, Appalachian St. 69

Marshall Phillips missed a 3-point try at the buzzer and an Appalachian State rally fell short as the Bobcats (5-1) held on to beat the Mountaineers (4-3) in Boone, N.C.

Appalachian trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half but went on an 8-0 run over the final 4:50 to set up the final shot. Neither team scored during the final 2:10 of the game.

Nate Holmstadt led Montana State with 15 points.

Phillips led the Mountaineers with a career-high 17 points and pulled down 18 rebounds.

TCU 113, North Texas 74

Lee Nailon led all five Texas Christian starters in double figures with 28 points as the unbeaten Horned Frogs beat the Eagles in Fort Worth, Texas.

Dennis Davis, who scored 16 points, topped all rebounders with 14, helping TCU (7-0) to a 54-36 advantage. North Texas (0-7) is still searching for its first win under first-year head coach Vic Trilli.
