Dollar Falls Sharply, Then Recovers
The dollar fell sharply against the Japanese yen Wednesday, then recovered much of its losses amid shifting speculation about how aggressively the Japanese government will move to bolster the country’s weak financial system. The dollar also fell against the German mark as both currencies were hurt by the yen’s surge during European trading.
The dollar fell as much as 1.29 yen in overnight trading as investors grew confident that the Japanese government would act boldly to shore up the financial system. But sentiment quickly shifted back the other way.
