Avon Goes Outside For Ceo Prospect

Compiled From Wire Services

Avon Products Inc. today named an outsider as the heir apparent to chief executive James E. Preston, bypassing the top three women on its management team.

Former Duracell International Inc. CEO Charles Perrin will take over as vice chairman and chief operating officer on Jan. 5, and is expected to succeed Preston as CEO in mid-1998.

Perrin’s appointment follows much speculation that Avon was prepared to name one of its top female executives to its helm. Executive vice-president Christina Gold, U.S. operations head Susan Kropf and global marketing president Andrea Jung were all passed over for the job.

But Jung was named president of Avon’s worldwide operations and also was elected, along with Kropf, to the company’s board of directors.
