Four New Whooping Cough Cases Reported In County
Four new cases of whooping cough, including two adults, have surfaced in Kootenai County.
The victims include a 49-year-old woman, 50-year-old man, a 7-year-old first-grader at Bryan Elementary School and a 2-year-old who attends a day-care center, according to the Panhandle Health District. The day-care center was not identified.
People who have been identified as having possibly been in contact with the victims are being notified. Anyone exposed to someone with whooping cough, or pertussis, should be tested, the Health District said.
Testing will be conducted at Panhandle Health District Monday from 9 a.m. to noon. Symptoms include red, watery eyes, cough, runny nose and scratchy throat. People with these symptoms should contact their doctor.
Anyone exposed to whooping cough is encouraged to take antibiotics.
People with whooping cough are contagious for five days, even when taking antibiotics and should isolate themselves from the public during that time, the health district said.
