Wildcats Push Panthers, But Lose

GSL boys

Mt. Spokane has a lot to learn as a basketball school.

Students wandered on the floor at halftime as the drill team marched on, another raced across the court as one team prepared to inbound the ball in the third quarter and the freshmen and sophomores were a little off on their timing for cheers.

The team, however, is much closer to competing in the Greater Spokane League.

The Wildcats kicked of their league season with a visit from Mead, the school they broke off from this fall, and pushed the Panthers in a 54-40 loss Friday.

“I thought we played hard,” said Mt. Spokane coach Bill Ayers, a former Mead assistant. “We lost our poise a couple of times and missed some defensive assignments. If they work that hard, we’ll win some games.”

True, the underdogs (1-2) had much more to play for, but if not for a miserable second quarter, they may have debuted with an upset for the ages against a team that expects to contend for the league championship.

“I thought Mt. Spokane played a really nice game,” Mead coach Jim Preston said. “They are well-coached and they have some nice players.”

He wasn’t upset his team (2-1) didn’t send a message with a blowout because they have things to concentrate on for future games that will have more impact in what they’re trying to accomplish.

For instance, after opening a 32-13 halftime lead with a 21-7 roll in the second quarter, the Panthers seemed to decide they didn’t need to rebound.

“We’ve been making those shots,” Preston said. “I hope it’s a one-time thing. One thing is, when we do miss those shots, we’ve got to get to the boards.”

In the second quarter, Mead hit 9 of 17 shots but that was after a 5-of-22 opening quarter. After building a 27-17 edge in rebounds through the half, the Panthers only had three in the third quarter and a dozen for the second half.

The Panthers were best when 6-6 forward Jason Galles, who has been sick, came off the bench. He had 12 points.

Matt Tabisz led the Wildcats with 15, including a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter that kept them in range.
