Celebration Of Art

The Getty Center, Los Angeles’ $1 billion hilltop monument to art and architecture, is set to open Tuesday. Many people feel the sprawling complex in the Santa Monica mountains will improve L.A.’s beleaguered cultural reputation. The Getty Center’s 24-acre facility is both a museum and arts complex. Most of the estimated 1.5 million annual visitors will stroll through the museum’s 50 galleries, while staff and scholars will use the Getty’s research facility, conservation institute and education wings.
