Sandpit Runs Fourth In Finale

Compiled From Wire Services

River Bay charged from last to win the $500,000 1-1/2-mile Hollywood Turf Cup in Inglewood, Calif., by 1-1/4 lengths over Awad, upstaging Sandpit in his final race.

Eight-year-old Sandpit, making the 40th start of his stellar career, briefly got a head in front at the top of the lane, but River Bay was in high gear under Alex Solis and took the lead with a furlong to go. Sandpit finished a neck back in fourth under Corey Nakatani.

U.S. entry Val’s Prince, ridden by Cash Asmussen, won the $897,000 International Cup in Hong Kong by a head over Oriental Express. It was the first international horse racing meet in Hong Kong since it reverted to Chinese rule in July.
