Veteran Stars Lift Stanford
In dire need of a victory, No. 18 Stanford turned to its two big guns.
Olympia Scott and Vanessa Nygaard did not disappoint, combining for 50 points to lead the Cardinal to a 91-78 victory over No. 5 Illinois on Sunday.
“It definitely was a must-win situation for our team,” said Scott, who scored 26 points, two more than Nygaard. “We’re definitely disappointed that we don’t have a winning record, but we’re not down in the dumps about it.”
Milena Flores added 17 points and Melody Peterson 15 for the Cardinal (2-3). Peterson had four of Stanford’s 10 steals as coach Tara VanDer-veer’s club avoided its worst start in 17 seasons.
Illinois (4-4), which lost for the third time in five days, was paced by Tauja Catchings’ 15 points and nine rebounds. Ashley Berggren and Alicia Sheeler combined for 19 points and 18 rebounds for the Illini, who had a 23-11 advantage on the offensive boards.
