Ewu Places Two Players On Select Team
Two Eastern Washington University football seniors have been selected to the 1997 Burger King Division I-AA Coaches’ All-America Team.
Quarterback Harry Leons from Olympia, Wash., and defensive tackle Chris Scott from Wenatchee, Wash., are among the 24 players honored by the American Football Coaches Association.
With 2,588 yards, a 61.9 percent completion percentage, 21 touchdowns and five interceptions during the regular season, Leons’ 1997 quarterback efficiency rating of 169.5 ranked fourth in NCAA Division I-AA. It also shattered the school record of 157.0 set in 1967 by Bill Diedrick. Leons’ career passing efficiency rating of 140.8 broke Diedrick’s previous record of 136.7.
His 2,588 passing yards this season ranks fourth in Eastern history and 4,363 in his career ranks fifth. His average this season of 258.8 yards per game is the second-best performance in school history.
Scott’s 10 sacks during the regular season ranks as the sixth-best performance in school history. He finished with 59 total tackles, including 17 for losses, and added three passes broken up, three forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries.
“We had a great season team-wise, and there’s no way I would have received these honors without everybody else on our defense,” Scott said.
“I couldn’t ask to play with any better people or for better coaches,” he added.”
With 24-1/2 sacks in his career, Scott ranks third in Eastern history. His 216 career tackles ranks ninth in Eastern history, and his six career forced fumbles is a school record. , DataTimes
