Alleged Gunman Held After Brief Standoff

A man who allegedly fired a gun into a crowd Thursday evening was arrested after a brief standoff with officers, Spokane police said.

A police officer driving away from the Public Safety Building about 8 p.m. saw a man firing a gun while standing on the front porch of an apartment building at Adams and Boone, Spokane Police Lt. Al Odenthal said.

At least nine police officers called to the scene for backup surrounded the building with their weapons drawn.

The man ran into an apartment and surrendered to police shortly after, Odenthal said.

Police do not know why the man was shooting into the crowd. He and another man were arrested Thursday, Odenthal said. Their identities were not released.

Police kept the house surrounded while the apartments in the building were searched for weapons.

A teen at the scene told officers he had been kicked in the face when the shots were fired. No other injuries were reported.
