King Investigation Denied
A grand jury panel in Memphis, Tenn., has refused to open a new investigation into the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., above center with Jesse Jackson, left, and Ralph Abernathy, ruling “there was not sufficient, credible information” to warrant further review. Under Tennessee law, any private citizen with information about a crime can ask for a grand jury investigation. Prosecutors have declined to ask for one, saying they are convinced of James Earl Ray’s guilt. Ray, 69, who confessed to the April 4, 1968, slaying, is serving a 99-year sentence.
