Hulbert, Pierce Lead U-Hi To Team Title
Seniors Tara Hulbert and Coleen Pierce teamed to win the all-around title and lead University to the team title of the eighth North Central Invitational gymnastics meet.
Hulbert won the vault and placed second on the uneven bars, and Pierce won the floor exercise and tied for second on the balance beam. Their combined score of 35.1 came up shy of the invitational-record 35.6 set in 1993.
U-Hi scored 124.8 points, 7.5 ahead of runner-up and 1996 champion Central Valley. Port Angeles (109.85), Kamiakin (105.45) and the host Indians (102.3) rounded out the top five of the record 11-team field.
Pasco’s Sara Bankhemper and Hana Merk placed second in the all-around at 34.05. Bankhemper set a meet record on the beam with a 9.15. Mead’s Heather Salo scored 9.0 last year.
Kaysi Crouse of Port Angeles won the bars. Crouse was part of the all-around title team in ‘96.
Ferris, with defending floor champion Kacey Frederickson, was a late scratch. Lakeside of Nine Mile competed in the first meet in school history.
