Ewu Beats WSU For First Time In 45 Years

Eastern Washington turned a solid margin on the backboards into its first men’s basketball victory over Washington State in more than 45 years, knocking off the Cougars 83-82 in overtime Monday night in the Tri-Cities Coliseum.

The last time EWU beat WSU was 72-71 on Dec. 1, 1952 in Pullman.

Karim Scott grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds as the Eagles (5-4) had a 54-39 margin on the boards to more than make up for 36-percent shooting from the field.

Scott also had 21 points to lead four Eagles in double figures.

Shannon Taylor added 18 points, Jason Humbert had 14 and Deon Williams 12.

WSU (6-4) led 40-35 at halftime, largely because of 58 percent shooting from the field while the Eagles got down 42 percent of their shots. But the second half, WSU cooled off to 39 percent, going 0-for-4 from 3-point range.

Chris Crosby scored 23 points and Carlos Daniel 21 to lead the Cougars.
