Madison’s 3-Point Barrage Propels Jaguars By Huskies
Pac-10/Big Sky/Big West/WCC
Toby Madison hit five 3-pointers and scored 22 points Monday to lead South Alabama to a 69-52 win over Washington in Mobile, Ala.
Madison shot 8-for-12 from the floor and put in just the kind of effort the Jaguars (4-2) needed on the day they learned they would be without point guard Rusty Yoder for the rest of the season.
Washington (6-2) got 14 points from Deon Luton and a 12-point, nine-rebound night from 7-foot center Todd MacCulloch.
Yoder, a senior who averaged 11 points over the first four games, decided to undergo season-ending surgery to repair a shoulder injury that has been bothering him for more than a year.
Without him, all five South Alabama starters played at least 32 minutes and coach Bob Weltlich used only seven players. Darrian Evans had 12 points, while Rico Alderson added 11 and Jerome Coaxum had 10.
The Jaguars slowed things down and took just 46 shots, but made 26 of them. They also went 7-for-10 from 3-point range.
Controlling the tempo throughout, the Jaguars held the Huskies to 39 percent shooting and forced them into 20 turnovers.
