Seminoles Cut Down Arizona

LaMarr Greer scored a career-high 26 points, including a pair of 3-pointers in the final 1:44, as No. 17 Florida State beat No. 5 Arizona 84-79 Tuesday night at Tallahassee, Fla.

Greer hit an off-balance 25-footer as the shot clock was about to expire to give Florida State an 82-77 lead with 50 seconds left.

Greer made 11 of 13 shots from the field and all three of his 3-point attempts for the Seminoles (9-2), whose only two losses this season were to top-ranked North Carolina and No. 2 Kansas.

Mike Bibby scored 26 points for Arizona, including six 3-pointers, but had only four points in the second half for the defending national champions. Michael Dickerson added 21 points for the Wildcats (7-3), who played their first game in 10 days.

At Los Angeles, Raef LaFrentz had 17 points and nine rebounds as the Jayhawks (14-1) overcame 16 first-half turnovers to defeat the Trojans (4-4) for their sixth straight victory.

LaFrentz became the third player in Kansas history with 1,000 or more rebounds. The senior has 1,005 boards and needs 183 to pass career leader Danny Manning.

Paul Pierce also had 17 points for the Jayhawks, who were playing the Trojans for the first time since 1980.

The Jayhawks have won 46 of their last 48 regular-season nonconference games.

At Lexington, Ky., Allen Edwards scored six of his 16 points during a 14-0 spurt as the Wildcats (10-1) ran their winning streak to eight games with a victory over American (3-6).

American handled Kentucky’s press most of the first half, turning the ball over just two times and tying the score at 25-25 on Saliou-Binet Telly’s 16-foot jumper.

At Columbia, S.C., BJ McKie scored a career-high 32 points and outplayed his high-school rival Roderick “Moo Moo” Blakney to carry the Gamecocks (7-1) to victory over the Bulldogs (1-4).

At Hartford, Conn., Richard Hamilton scored 21 points and the Huskies (10-1) used some impressive defense for a victory over the Minutemen (6-4) in the 100th meeting between the neighboring state universities.

At San Juan, Puerto Rico, Ryan Bowen scored 16 points and Ricky Davis added 15 to lead the Hawkeyes (10-1) to victory over the Bonnies (8-3) in the championship game of the Christmas San Juan Shootout.

CS Northridge 76, N. Florida 62

Mike O’Quinn scored 21 points as the Matadors (3-6) ended a three-game losing streak by defeating the Ospreys (1-4) in the consolation game of the Coors Light Classic at Fresno.

Wyoming 60, Montana St. 59

At Laramie, Wyo., Jeron Roberts scored 22 points, including the game-winning free throw in the last minute, as the Cowboys (7-2) beat the Bobcats (6-3).

At Providence, R.I., Erron Maxey had a career-high of 19 points on 8 of 9 shooting to lead the Friars (4-3) past the Lions (2-8).

New Mexico St. 90, Alcorn St. 79

At Las Cruces, N.M., Denmark Reid scored 27 points and the Aggies (7-3) hit 33 free throws in the second half to defeat the Braves (5-6).

At Madison, Wis., Sam Okey and Sean Mason scored 14 points each, leading the Badgers (6-5) to victory over the Wolf Pack (4-3).

San Diego St. 66, Long Beach St. 63

At Long Beach, Calif., Jason Richey scored 19 points, nearly half of them free throws, as the Aztecs (55-5) defeated the 49ers (3-6.

UNLV 77, UC Irvine 55

At Las Vegas, senior Corky Ausborne scored 14 points, including his first dunk, to lead the Runnin’ Rebels to a win over the Anteaters (2-7) before a crowd of 12,913.
