With a heavyweight unification bout against Evander Holyfield ruled out for now, Lennox Lewis plans to make his next title defense against Shannon Briggs or Buster Douglas.

A bout against either one would take place March 28, probably in Atlantic City, N.J., Lewis and his manager, Frank Maloney, said.

Pro boxers beware: Your occupation is so dangerous it is not covered by New York’s workers’ compensation laws.

A mid-level state appeals court ruled that state law prohibits compensation for any injury caused by the “willful intention of the injured employee to bring about the injury or death of himself or another.”

The court said no one can seriously argue that a pro boxer does not enter the ring without intending to harm his or her opponent or without the knowledge that they themselves could be hurt or killed.

A new league may rise from the ashes of the Continental Indoor Soccer League as early as 1998, with play in the fall rather than summer.

Brian Weymouth, managing general partner of the Arizona Sandsharks, said that eight of the CISL’s 11 members probably will establish a new league for 1998.

Its name, how many teams it will have and what type of schedule it will play probably will be worked out by the end of January.
