‘Writing This Letter Makes Me Feel More Lonely’

Letters home

Spec. Kelly Reid, 28, worked as a valet at Coeur d’Alene Resort before coming to Bosnia, where he’s an emergency medical technician.

Being in Bosnia over the holidays, I really try and not think about it. It’s just another day. The more you think about the holidays and about being away from home, the more homesick you feel.

I love my family and I know they love me. But like my sister writes in her letters to me, we are all looking up at the same stars at night. It probably doesn’t make any sense, but for me it makes me feel closer to home.

I have a family over here in the people I work with. They’re 5,000 miles away from home also, and they’re feeling just as lonely as me. We have to take care of each other.

Writing this letter makes me feel more lonely, makes me think of home. I love and miss home, but I try to keep my mind off it as much as possible.
