Russia Avoids Loss To Swiss

Associated Press

Sergei Shikanov scored with 37 seconds to go for a 3-3 tie as Russia avoided an embarrassing loss to Switzerland in the World Junior Hockey Championships on Saturday.

The Russians pulled the goalie for a man advantage and used it well to get the tying goal.

In another game, the Czech Republic beat Germany 9-1.

Switzerland is unbeaten after having surprised Slovakia 3-1 on Friday. The core of the Swiss team is the nation’s first medal-winning group, which took the European Junior Championships bronze medal last spring.

Right wing Michael Riesen, the first Swiss ever drafted in the first round by an NHL club, was held scoreless, but Rene Stussi starred with one goal and one assist. Riesen was Edmonton’s first choice, 14th overall, last summer.

In group B, Switzerland and Russia are 1-0-1, Team USA and Slovakia 1-1-0 and Kazakhstan 0-2-0.

The Czech Republic and Finland lead Group A with 2-0-0 records. Sweden is 1-1-0, Canada and Germany are 0-2-0.
