Co-Op Schedules Vote On Natural Gas System

From Staff And Wire Reports

Members of the Northern Lights Inc. electric cooperative will vote Jan. 26 on a proposal to build a natural gas system that would serve Sagle, Old Town, Priest River and Newport.

The $12 million system would provide gas to 4,500 business and residential customers who now have no access to gas, said General Manager Jon Shelby.

“The long-term benefits to our members include energy choices, a return of capital, as well as the advantage of the comfort, convenience, energy savings and economic growth natural gas can bring to rural communities,” he said.

Shelby noted that only gas users, not all members of the cooperative, will be responsible for the cost of the system, which could be completed in two years.

The member vote will take place 6:30 p.m. in the Northern Lights headquarters Building A, 1423 Dover Highway, in Sandpoint.

Mail-in ballots also will be sent to members in advance of the meeting.
