U.S. Beats Swiss In Junior Hockey Tournament
Mike York scored one goal and assisted on two as Team USA beat Switzerland 4-1 at the World Junior Hockey Championships Tuesday.
Team USA finished third in Group B, and will meet the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals today.
In other games Tuesday, Canada beat Germany 2-0, Finland and the Czech Republic tied 5-5, and Russia defeated Slovakia 4-0.
York, the scoring leader and an All-Star forward in last season’s championships, assisted on Jesse Boulerice’s opening goal in the first period. York, who plays for Michigan State, added a powerplay goal at 13:11 of the third period for a 3-1 lead, and assisted on another powerplay goal by Jeff Farkas at 17:10.
In Group A, Finland finished with a 3-1-0 record. The Czech Republic was 2-1-1, Sweden and Canada 2-0-2 and Germany 0-0-4, with Sweden’s win against Canada deciding the third spot.
In Group B, Russia was 3-1-0, Switzerland 2-1-1, Team USA 2-0-2 and Kazakstan and Slovakia 1-0-3, with a victory for Kazakstan deciding the order for the final two spots.
