Wolves Spoil Jordan Record

Associated Press

The Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Chicago Bulls for the first time ever, 99-95 Tuesday night in Minneapolis, ruining Michael Jordan’s NBA record-setting 788th consecutive double-digit scoring game.

Jordan scored 33 points to eclipse Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s mark of 787 games with at least 10 points. But Stephon Marbury scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half to rally the Timberwolves.

The win was Minnesota’s fourth straight and its first in 17 tries against Chicago since joining the league in 1989.

Greg Ostertag scored a season-high 21 points, Antoine Carr added a season-best 19 and the Utah Jazz had the 1,000th win in franchise history as they beat the Nuggets 132-99 in Denver.

Karl Malone had 18 points and 10 rebounds and John Stockton had nine assists and four points for the Jazz.

Larry Johnson had 26 points and John Starks scored 14 of his 16 in the second half as the visiting New York Knicks held off the Orlando Magic 84-79.

Kemp now second

Cleveland’s Shawn Kemp has moved into second place among Eastern Conference forwards in balloting for the NBA All-Star game.

Kemp, who has played in the last five All-Star games, has received 98,416 votes, trailing only Detroit’s Grant Hill (202,794). In first returns announced last week, Kemp trailed Chicago’s Scottie Pippen, who has not played this season.

Pippen’s teammate, Michael Jordan, continues to lead all Eastern Conference guards with 218,651 votes, followed by Orlando’s Penny Hardaway, who has 127,087. Hardaway is out 4-6 weeks after arthroscopic knee surgery. The leading vote-getter at center is Atlanta’s Dikembe Mutombo with 109,826.

In the Western Conference, Minnesota’s Kevin Garnett (137,714) and Utah’s Karl Malone (116,912) continue to lead all forwards. Shaquille O’Neal of the Los Angeles Lakers (147,266) leads at center and Seattle’s Gary Payton (106,536) and the Lakers’ Eddie Jones (93,674) lead the guards. Like Hardaway, O’Neal is on the injured list with an abdominal strain.

The All-Star Game will be played Sunday, Feb. 8, at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Askew suspended

Vincent Askew, who hadn’t played in two games since being activated from the injured list, was suspended for one game by the Portland Trail Blazers for missing practice.
