Heimerman Has Big Night As Pirates Roll

Whitworth College bounced back from Friday’s lopsided loss to Willamette by outlasting Linfield 79-71 in an NCIC men’s basketball matchup Saturday night.

Ben Heimerman scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds for the 8th-ranked Pirates (14-4, 7-3), who raced to an early 15-point lead in avenging Friday night’s 96-66 embarrassment.

Heimerman also converted four crucial free throws - two coming after a Linfield technical foul for arguing a call - as Whitworth held off an early second-half surge by Linfield.

Doug Schulz added 16 points for the Pirates on an 8-for-8 shooting effort, and teammate Gabe Jones chipped in 12.

“It was a big win for us,” said Whitworth coach Warren Friedrichs. “Any time you win on the road, it’s important.

“I was really pleased with our defense and the fact that we held them to 39 percent shooting.”
