Six Athletes Meet Ncaa Qualifying Marks

Three athletes from Washington State and another three from Idaho achieved NCAA provisional-qualifying marks at the McDonald’s Open Indoor Meet at the Kibbie Dome on the University of Idaho campus Saturday.

Washington State junior Rasto Kiplangat, from Kenya, ran a NCAA provisional time of 1 minute, 49.37 seconds to lead a 1-2-3 Cougar finish in the men’s 800 meters. Bernard Lagat, a sophomore from Kenya, won the mile in an NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 4:02.18.

Idaho’s Chris Kwaramba won the triple jump at 51-feet, 11 inches and was followed by WSU’s Hilary Mawindi at 51-6-1/4.

Cougars Ian Waltz and Kevin Moore threw Pac-10 outdoor qualifying and lifetime-best distances in the discus. Waltz won the event with a throw of 185-11 and Moore was second with his toss of 170-6.

Idaho’s Jill Wimer won two events - the discus (141-10) and the shot put (46-0-1/2).

Playfair enjoys best take of meet

PK Whiskey, ridden by Brian Eide, rallied from off the pace to win the estimated $8,000 ARC Premium Arabian Stakes at Playfair Race Course on Saturday, highlighting a day in which the track took in its largest single-day handle of the winter meet.

PK Whiskey, with a time of 1:31-4/5 on a sloppy track, edged Heez My Flame and Rasfadjur in a three-way photo finish.

Ducking The Issue won her third consecutive race, winning the $10,000-added Prima Donna Handicap with a time of 1:21-1/5. Ducking The Issue nipped Tommy Ama at the wire, with A Chance To Knight third.

A crowd of 1,300 contributed to a handle of $189,279, with another $19,008 wagered on Playfair at Emerald Downs. Playfair bettors wagered $146,111 on Emerald Downs races for $354,398.
