Police End Standoff With Army

Compiled From Wire Services

Mutinous military police ended a four-day standoff with troops Sunday, saying a special commission would consider their complaints about compensation in the wake of a civil war peace accord.

The army pulled back armored vehicles and at least one 50mm cannon that had been rolled up to the military police headquarters late Saturday.

Hundreds of the Ambulatory Military Police had been holding the building since Wednesday to insist on more compensation when the force is demobilized as part of the U.N.-brokered peace agreement signed by the government and leftist rebels in December.

The police say they want about $8,000 each plus plots of land similar to those promised other members of the armed forces who will be demobilized under the peace deal.
