Dollar Ends Marginally Higher

The dollar ended mixed Monday, reflecting growing nervousness over whether the richest industrialized nations will act to halt the currency’s rise at their meeting in Berlin this weekend.

Traders said the dollar was supported by more evidence of a moderately expanding U.S. economy and Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin’s reaffirmation of the Clinton administration’s strong-dollar policy.

Nonetheless, market exuberance to bid the dollar higher was noticeably absent for the first time this year, and some traders used the opportunity to lock in profits from the dollar’s strength.
