Big Ballerinas Tip Scales For Cv

What do you get when 600-plus pounds of football players in pink leotards cavort in front of 1,800 people?

The Stinky Sneaker.

Central Valley High School linemen Preston Crossman, listed at 350 pounds last fall, and Wil Beck, at 280, made like ballerinas during the annual spirit basketball game between CV and University High School.

They were part of halftime routines between both the boys and girls games that swayed the judges who declared CV the winner.

Pink-clad from head to foot, Crossman and Beck gyrated hilariously to the Abba song “Dancing Queen.”

It was part of a disco theme that included vintage songs of the Village People, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, and music from Saturday Night Fever.

Teachers Dale Ethridge, Bill Gilchrist and Jay Rydell kicked things off with their version of “YMCA.”

Ethridge pulled out all the stops, lip-synching the words and gyrating throughout the packed gymnasium dressed in his Harley-Davidson biker leathers.

“The whole idea is to have fun,” said Ethridge, whose shaved head, goatee and tattoos gave him that biker look.

“I always do crazy stuff like that in school,” CV’s creative writing teacher and wrestling coach said. “I had to explain all the tattoos to people. I was in the Army.”

Which probably explains why they didn’t do the Village People’s “In the Navy.”

When Charlie Hollen did his best John Travolta imitation - or was it Richie Cunningham? - along with Kathy Wolrehammer, Leann Danley, Heidi Holmquist and Jill Enevold, the Shoe was secured.
