Absentee Ballots Fail To Push Newport School Levy To Victory

From Staff And Wire Reports

Defeat of a two-year operating levy for the Newport School District apparently was sealed when 109 more ballots were counted and support declined slightly.

The ballots included 45 that couldn’t be counted on election night because they had been marked with pen instead of pencil.

The levy is receiving 54.1 percent support in the new tally, 838-711, but it needs 60 percent to pass.

Auditor Ann Swenson said 415 absentee ballots still had not been returned Thursday, but it is unlikely enough properly postmarked ballots favoring the levy will be received to change the outcome.
