Obituaries

Norbert Romain Spokane

Vigil service for Norbert A. Romain, 80, will be at 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. There will be private inurnment at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Mr. Romain, who died Saturday, was born in Keuterville, Idaho.

He graduated from St. Gertrude’s Academy in Cottonwood, Idaho, and attended Kinman Business University.

He went to work at Waikiki Dairy, where he met his future wife, Dorothy Romain. He also worked at Early Dawn Dairy and worked in the dairy industry for nearly 50 years, and was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 582.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Dorothy; three daughters, Diane Lockhart of Seattle, Virginia Butts of Spokane and Donna Reid of Auburn, Wash.; three sisters, Helen Engel, Maxine Kopczynski and Ella Mae Edmunds, all of Spokane; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Elvina Waddell Deer Park

Memorial service for Elvina M. Waddell, 95, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Deer Park. Burial was at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park.

Mrs. Waddell, a former resident of the Horseshoe Lake area near Deer Park, died Jan. 31.

She was born in Spokane.

She was a homemaker and worked on the family ranch.

Her husband, Wilford Waddell, died in 1983.

Survivors include a daughter, Ina Bainter of Spokane; a son, John Waddell of Deer Park; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Lee Jones Jr. Spokane

No service will be held for Lee R. Jones Jr., at his request. A gathering will be held at a later date. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jones, a Spokane resident since 1945, died Tuesday. He was 73.

He was born in Salmon, Idaho.

He served three years in the South Pacific during World War II with the Army Engineers.

He was a small plane flight instructor and managed an airfield in Rosalia, Wash., before becoming a duster pilot in southeast Washington.

Mr. Jones retired as a lithographer in the graphic arts business.

He is survived by his wife, Gretchen Jones; a brother, Emmett Jones, of Eugene, Ore.; and two sisters, Maple McElvain and Opal Martin, both of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Gospel Mission.

Milton Traphagen Spokane

Memorial service for Milton L. “Milt” Traphagen, 58, will be at 1 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mr. Traphagen, who died Wednesday, was born in Los Angeles and and had lived in Spokane for more than 32 years.

He worked as an optician for the Spokane Eye Clinic.

Mr. Traphagen was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 582, Eagles Lodge No. 2 and was an Air Force veteran.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Myrna Traphagen; two daughters, Kelly Rodriguez and Joni Traphagen-Cary, both of Spokane; and a sister, Barbara Troop of Prosser, Wash.

Memorial contributions may made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.

Ethel Holter Colville, Wash.

Service for Ethel Holter, 98, will be at 11 a.m. today at Colville United Methodist Church. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Rice (Wash.) I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Holter, a former Rice resident, died Jan. 30.

She was born in Cyclone, Mo., and moved to Rice in 1903. She graduated from Colville High School.

She married Paul Holter in 1924 in Colville and they farmed near Rice. Her husband died in 1977.

Mrs. Holter was a member of the Pinetree Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, Quillisascut Grange and the Pamona State and National Granges.

Survivors include a sister, Goldie Entwistle of Colville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Quillisascut Grange Memorial Fund.

June Hurley Spokane

Vigil service for June L. Hurley, 79, is planned for 7 p.m. today at Hennessey Valley Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday St. Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.

Born in Plummer, Idaho, Mrs. Hurley died Tuesday.

Her family moved to California in the late 1950s and she worked for the San Mateo Unified School District. She returned to Spokane 18 years ago when she retired and remarried.

Her husband, David Hurley, died in 1989.

She is survived by three sons, Richard McBreen of Fremont, Calif., Dennis McBreen of Port Orchard, Wash., and Thomas McBreen of Ventura, Calif.; three stepsons, David, Paul and Gary Hurley; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Lyle Durant Spokane

Memorial service for Lyle L. Durant, 75, is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Durant, who was born in Randall, Minn., died Wednesday.

He worked for Union Pacific Railroad as an engineer for 35 years and retired in 1981.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He had lived in the Spokane area for 44 years and was a member of the Railroad Employees Old Timer Club.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Betty Lou Durant; a son, Steven Durant, and a daughter, Jane Durant, both of Spokane; his mother, Florence Durant of Spokane; a sister, Betty Coyle of Buckley, Wash.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Charles Puckett Blue Creek, Wash.

Service for Charles Wesley Puckett, 87, is set for 1 p.m. today at Chewelah Free Methodist Church. Graveside service will follow at Chewelah Memorial Park. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Ashford, Wash., Mr. Puckett died Wednesday.

When he was young, he worked in the woods near Onalaska, Wash., and as a mechanic in St. Louis and at Grand Coulee Dam. He also farmed at Blue Creek.

He retired as a watchman at Plum Creek Lumber near Colville in 1974.

He was a member of the Blue Creek and the Addy Granges.

His wife, Edith, died in 1982.

Survivors include two daughters, Gayla Parkhill of Hungry Horse, Mont., and Sherry Nerger of Mead; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Virginia Corey Deary, Idaho

Viewing for Virginia M. Corey, 69, will be held Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow, Idaho. Service will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Avon Cemetery near Deary.

Mrs. Corey, who was born in North Dakota, died Wednesday.

She moved to the Deary area as a child and attended school in Deary, graduating from Deary High School in 1944. She went on to attend Whitworth College in Spokane and later enrolled in the nursing program at Deaconess Hospital.

Mrs. Corey returned to Deary and lived in several logging camps in the Avery area before becoming bookkeeper and co-owner of Chuck’s Saw Service in Deary until 1985.

Mrs. Corey also served as Deary city clerk for 12 years and worked at Washington State University as a sorority housekeeper in 1995.

She worked as a housekeeper after her retirement and was a member of the White Pine Baptist Church in Moscow.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Chuck; a son, Todd Corey of Spokane; a daughter, Kelly Zimmerman of Deary; her mother, Eunice Lovell of Moscow; three sisters, Shirley Jones, Joanne Hammerly and Penelope Novak, all of Boise; four brothers, Paul Ward of Deary, Ted and Steve Ward, both of Spokane, and Edward Ward of Oregon; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Deary Ambulance Fund, or the White Pine Baptist Church.

Arnold ‘Sam’ Sampson Spokane

No service will be held for Arnold E. “Sam” Sampson at his request. Private inurnment will be at Riverside Memorial Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sampson, 91, died Monday.

He was born in Camas, Wash., and moved to Millwood in 1912.

He lived in San Francisco for several years and returned to Spokane in 1968. He worked in the brewery business for 20 years in San Francisco and Spokane.

Mr. Sampson is survived by his wife of 68 years, Gladys; two sisters, Edith Deeble and Gwen Nichols, both of Spokane.

Charles Davis Spokane

Memorial service for Charles William Davis, 72, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Davis, who was born in Wichita, Kan., died Tuesday.

He was a World War II Navy veteran and worked for the Wichita Beacon in Kansas until 1960, when he moved to Spokane and worked in the engraving department of The Spokesman-Review. He retired in 1987.

Mr. Davis was a member of Grace Baptist Church and the Corbin Senior Center.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty; two daughters, Carol Davis and Jackie Hubbard, both of Spokane; a son, Terry Davis of Spokane; a brother, Richard Davis of San Diego; his stepmother, Whilaminai Davis of Spokane; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Baptist Church.

Arthur Kirby Brush Prairie, Wash.

Service for Arthur Roy Kirby, 74, was Wednesday at Layne’s Funeral Home in Battle Ground, Wash. Private burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Pend Oreille, Wash.

Mr. Kirby, a former Tiger, Wash., resident, died Sunday.

He was born in Bandon, Ore.

He and his wife, Millie, moved to Tiger in 1946.

He worked as a logger in Montana for a few years and then returned to Tiger. He was a long-haul truck driver and worked for Jim’s Transfer from 1956 until 1960. He worked as a logger again and then on the construction of Boundary Dam. He returned to truck driving in 1965 and bought his own truck in 1973 and began driving for International Transport.

He and his wife moved to the Vancouver, Wash., area in 1976.

He was a World War II Naval Air Corps veteran and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Kirby is survived by his wife; eight sons, Chet Kirby of Gilroy, Calif., Dennis Kirby of Auburn, Wash., Doug and Steven Kirby, both of Seattle, Terry Brandt of Anaheim, Calif., Michael Kirby of Lynden, Wash., Duff Kirby of Algona, Wash., and Matthew Kirby of Vancouver; a daughter, Cindy Anderson of Deer Park; a sister, Arlene Brandt of Garden Grove, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
