Shadle Clinches Regional Spot

GSL boys

Super Sub did it again.

Kerry Hipps came off the bench to hit a couple clutch shots as Shadle Park clinched a spot in the Eastern AAA regional tournament with its 12th straight win, 55-41 over visiting University Tuesday night.

“Not in the first half,” Hipps said of his Super Sub status. “In the second half maybe.”

University, which fell behind 8-0, caught the Highlanders at 34 late in the third quarter, but Hipps banked a shot in from the right wing for a 36-34 lead at the break.

Shadle Park (14-3 overall, 12-1 in the Greater Spokane League) then turned a Titan turnover into a layup to open the fourth quarter and Chris Anderson and Hipps followed with consecutive 3’s for a 44-34 lead less than 2 minutes in.

Jeff Price’s 3 with 4:20 to go pulled the Titans closer at 44-39. However, right as Shadle Park coach Darcy Weisner was trying to get his team to pull the ball outside, Hipps converted a three-point play for a 47-39 lead with 1:42 to go.

U-Hi (9-7, 7-5) overcame 15 turn-overs by making 13 of 19 shots through three quarters but made just 2 of 14 in the final period.

“Because we were in foul trouble we went to a little bit of a zone. That seemed to help,” Weisner said. “It bought us a little bit of time.”

Anderson was one of those in foul trouble. He had eight points in the first quarter before getting his second foul. He had 12 at the half but picked up two quick fouls in the third and missed more than 4 minutes.

U-Hi never cashed in. Despite hitting 8 of 15 free throws, three of the misses were the front end of one-and-ones.

“It’s not so much how many you miss, it’s when you miss them,” Titans coach Jay Humphrey said. “We had a chance to take the lead. Who knows what that would have done mentally if we got the lead.”

“We don’t play so much as a team in the first, second and third,” Hipps said. “In the fourth quarter we turn it on. That’s what we’re known for. We’ve got to stop doing that, it scares everybody. We have to play at the level we’re capable of.”
