Tway’s 8-Under-Par 64 Tops Buick Invitational

Compiled From Wire Services

Bob Tway is back atop the leader board at Torrey Pines, where his victory 11 years ago was the springboard to a career year.

Tway shot an 8-under-par 64 in the opening round of the Buick Invitational Thursday in San Diego to take a one-shot lead over 1991 winner Jay Don Blake, Olin Browne and Taylor Smith.

Tway, Blake and Smith played the 6,592-yard North Course, which is generally two strokes easier than the South course, which Browne played. Players switch courses on Friday, and the last two rounds are on the 7,000-yard South Course.

Tiger Woods survived the heat to shoot a 70 in the first round of the Asian Honda Classic in Bangna, Thailand, and bloodied Lee Petters survived a whap in the nose to lead the tournament with a 6-under-par 66.

Petters, playing in his first tournament as a full-time pro, walked off the 14th tee right into a practice swing by his playing partner Shakeep Hussain of Pakistan.

The club caught Petters square in the nose, splitting it open and dropping the Briton to the ground.

Kelly Robbins had an eagle and two birdies on the par-5 holes en route to a 6-under-par 66 and a one-stroke lead over unheralded Kate Golden after one round of the inaugural Diet Dr Pepper National Pro-Am in West Palm Beach, Fla.
